Project for Visual Effects modeling and rendering course consisting of polygon and NURBS modeling techniques and Arnold shaders culminating in a still-frame final image. Both vehicles were chosen because of their ties to the film "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," but due to course constraints, had to be real vehicles. The 1940s Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was polygon modeled and later rendered in a still image. The WWII era ZIS 100 (Soviet limousine) was modeled using NURBS.
Created using Maya, Arnold shaders, and Maya native rendering.
DISCLAIMER #1: I am aware that neither of the vehicle models are entirely accurate. As a beginner in Maya, I did the best I could in the time allotted for each project.
DISCLAIMER #2: I do not own the rights to "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" or any associated licensed property. This project was created for educational purposes only.

The background image in the final rendering shot was created in VUE and added to Maya for rendering (not superimposed or composited in other software, the final image is an untouched Maya render).
After the VSFX course completed, I went back and edited the final photo using Adobe Photoshop to be more in line with the visual style of the "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" film.

STORY
My father was a big inspiration for this project. Having lost my father to cancer in 2018, I try to find little ways to carry on his creative legacy. He was a wonderful artist, but his real talents lay in scale modeling. He was amazing at it and won many awards in the state of TX and nationally. He was a WWII aviation buff and could name any plane in the sky or at the numerous air shows we attended together. In a way, I feel like this project was a way to connect to him and continue his passion for modeling in my own way. Additionally, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" was one of his favorite movies and we watched it frequently. As the only non major in this VSFX course, I challenged myself with more complex models because the emotional ties with my father's work and the ambition he instilled in me throughout my upbringing.
